Turnips Are Tops

As you start to think of autumn stews and casseroles, don't forget turnips. When it comes to your health turnips are top of the list, as they're rich in the vital cancer-fighting nutrients like vitamins A and C and also an excellent source of fibre which helps prevent bowel cancer.

To get the vitamin A you must eat the turnip tops which contain large amounts of beta-carotene – cook them like spinach. They're very low in calories – only 36 in a large portion – contain no fat or cholesterol and provide reasonable amounts of B vitamins, especially folic acid, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper and a little protein.

But that's only half the picture. Popular since Roman times they have a wonderful peppery flavour and are great finely sliced in stir-fries. They can be steamed, microwaved, roast, boiled or, when young, added raw to salads. They're a member of the cabbage family and so extremely rich in highly cancer protective phytochemicals called glucosinolates.

Slice thinly, put in a pan with a little melted butter, add black pepper and a sprinkle of marjoram, stir for a minute, add enough water to just cover, cover the pan and simmer gently till soft. Sprinkle with some more chopped marjoram and serve – my favourite turnip recipe.
