Sleep And Exhaustion After The Clocks Change

When the clocks change at the end of the month I always get an inbox full of emails from people who find the one our advance into spring really upsets their sleep patterns. As a result they get stressed, anxious and constantly tired for weeks on end. If this sounds like you, don’t panic, help is at hand thanks to Mother Nature and her basket full of simple remedies.

But first, a few tips for those of you who have sleep problems no matter what or when.

In general, anxious people sleep less well than happy ones. Again in general, happy people have better appetites and a better ability to absorb food than those suffering from anxiety. The happy bunch inevitably has a tendency to gain weight, whilst the unhappy are more likely to lose it.

As always, there are exceptions to the rule, and occasionally the response to anxiety, stress and unhappiness is ’comfort eating’ and subsequent weight gain. This though is far less common.

The scientific link between weight and sleep was first described in a paper published in the British Medical Journal in 1976 by Professor Arthur Crisp. He and his researchers conducted a random survey of 1,000 men and women. The overweight were happier than the underweight and happiness equals good sleep but anxiety and unhappiness means poor sleep.

If you’re already suffering from insomnia, don’t go on diet. If you’re underweight, putting on a few pounds will help, but serious obesity, leads to snoring and sleep disruption.

If insomnia is your problem, here are some answers. Never go to bed on an empty or an over-full stomach. Hunger pangs, indigestion and heartburn will all keep you awake.

Honey has long been a favourite folk remedy for insomnia. Take it with warm milk, a cup of camomile tea or hot water with lemon. Many herbal teas can help in your search for better sleep, lemon balm, fennel, lime and valerian are amongst the best.

As starchy foods encourage the release of a natural chemical called tryptophan, also present in milk, a bedtime sandwich often helps. The best filling is a mixture of basil and lettuce, both of which are soporifics. Even the Romans used wild lettuce to induce sleep.

Coffee, tea, chocolate or cola drinks, all contain caffeine which keeps you awake. High protein foods like meat, fish and cheese suppress the body’s production of tryptophan and should not be eaten late at night.

Vitano is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the temporary relief of symptoms associated with stress, such as fatigue, exhaustion and mild anxiety, based on traditional use only and great for the relief of:
• Stress
• Fatigue
• Exhaustion
• Mild anxiety

This all-natural remedy contains Rhodiola, or golden root as it is often referred to. It helps boost physical and mental health and such are its reputed powers that it is recognised as an official medicine in Russia and Scandinavia for treating fatigue, memory loss and poor concentration.

For at least 2,000 years this herb has featured in the healing literature.. As early as 77AD, the Greek physician Discorides wrote about the medicinal properties of the plant. The Vikings used it for strength and in Russia it has long been a folk medicine. Modern human studies have shown that it can help improve mental and physical performance under stress.

NiteHerb is another traditional herbal medicine that contains the plant Valerian, used for the temporary relief of sleep disturbances due to symptoms of mild anxiety exclusively based on its long-standing use.

Valerian has been taken for centuries to treat nervous anxiety, reduce muscle tension and relieve mild insomnia. Nicholas Culpepper, the famous 17th century English herbalist joins with many old writers to recommend the use both of herb and root, and praises valerian for its longevity and many comforting virtues.
