Eat To Beat Fatigue
At 22 and a single student Anais was finding it increasingly difficult to concentrate on work or anything. Sharing a house with five other students in Leeds didn’t do much for her diet and she grew more and more lethargic and exhausted.
“The constant fatigue, repeated headaches and increasing problems with my English and Spanish coursework at uni finally made me go to the GP. He said I was eating so badly that unless I made changes I would end up with severe anaemia.
“Mostly we ate cheap convenience food – toast, ready meals, takeaways, chocolate, crisps and microwave junk. We went out at least three times a week with a bottle of wine before leaving and three or four large vodkas, and more wine before the night was out. I spent so much on booze there was little left for food.
“Now, thanks to you I eat breakfast every day, Weetabix or yoghurt and fruit. Chicken sandwich or soup, and fruit for lunch, and meat or chicken, stir-fried or cooked in my George Foreman grill in the evening. I love fish, especially prawns and tuna, eat lots of fresh and some dried fruit, and some cheese and nuts. You advised to take vitamin C but I’d had problems in the past as it gave me heartburn and indigestion. The pharmacist recommended Boots ester-C which is a non-acid version which seems fine.”
I was surprised that fatigue and anaemia were Anais’ only problems as her diet was appalling and I calculated that she was getting nearly 33% of her calories from alcohol and it shouldn’t be more than 10%. At 5 feet 7 inches and 10st 10lb her BMI was good at 23.5 and she soon felt better after changing her diet. This was partly due to the vitamin C, which improves the absorption of iron into the bloodstream.
She was right about vitamin C and indigestion. It upsets people with a history of ulcers, heartburn and chronic digestive problems. Many vitamin manufacturers are now switching to non-acidic ester-C because it avoids these problems.
